lyrics

A high barred window gives wan light
That bruises as it moves west.
Cracked, crushed into dust,
My back aches with torn wings.

I've been the watery wrack
In a cracked old bowl.
The skin that cracks,
The teeth that chip.
A trip of the guts.

Sipping the limp sun’s lipids,
I watch others, small as motes,
Pressing their teeth to the bars,
(Teeth to the bars),
Like flies at horses' eyes.

I've been the watery wrack
In a cracked old bowl.
A trip of the guts,
As I slip the step.
I've been the watery wrack
In a cracked old bowl.
The skin that cracks,
The teeth that chip.

A leg, fringed and segmented,
Lacquered and thin,
Juts from me
And scratches sigils in the
Darkening dirt.
A secret war in my heart,
But the body is a betrayer.
A brittle shell,
That aches and cracks.

Others,
Flit above in the dusk.
The whirr of their wings
Sings a storm that lifts winds
The whirr of their wings sings.
A pale waxy light
roils and shifts
In the rifts of the chitin.

They don’t see me.
From the cracks in my thorax
Rises a solemn, flensed angel.

Pure, bloodless and bold,
it slips from the wreck.
Rising to the window's yawn
Cleaving the crowd,
Unfelt, unnoticed,
Breaching the bars,
It reaches the sun.
